Week One went by like the wind! We spent a lot of time getting to know each other through games and activities, and revisited some of the IB Learner profiles and attitudes we would like to show in the classroom.
In Daily 5, we went through the basics - how to select the right books to read using the 5 finger rule. Is the book interesting? what is the purpose of reading this book? Can I understand the words? Each student selected 4-5 books for their Daily 5 bag.
Then we went over ways to build our stamina to read for sustained periods of time.
Could we get started right away? Did we stay in one spot while reading? We managed to clock 1 minute and 30 seconds on our first try. By the third try we had read for 13 minutes as a whole class!! That was amazing focus demonstrated by our students!
In Math, we shared our thoughts on the subject, and plotted our ideas along a continuum. We will revisit this continuum in December to see if our thoughts have changed.
Next week, we will begin our inquiry into Who We Are.
We will view it through the lens of our rights and responsibilities.
Exploring place value in Math. We created numbers using base ten blocks for our classmates to guess.
