In Literacy this week, students spent some time reviewing and articulating their current reading and writing goals so that they can talk about them at the Three Way Conference.
In reading, as a class we focused on the strategy 'use text features' to help us understand non-fiction texts. We identified things like heading, subheading, diagram and bold text and thought about what their purpose is and how we can use them. We started to think about the topic, main idea and supporting detains in a non-fiction piece of writing. Next week, students will begin planning an information report.
In mathematics this week, students learnt about number-letter coordinates in the context of the maps they'd made of their cities. They labelled their grids with letters and numbers to describe the location of places in their city. They also analysed the data from their sleep and screen time survey, creating line plots for each day and then making observations about what the data tells us.
In problems-solving, we looked at the thinking skills of comprehension and application and looked at a checklist to help students approach unfamiliar problems:
Unit of Inquiry
In Unit of Inquiry time this week, we checked if we had answered all of our questions about 'how we organise ourselves' and reviewed the 'transdisciplinary skills' or 'attitudes to learning'. Students, with help from me, identified one skill that they need to work on as a general learning goal.
We also began our new unit, 'how we express ourselves'. The central idea is:
The tools we use affect how we express our ideas.
This unit has a music focus. We listened to three different pieces of music and the student wrote down what they could hear, what they thought and what they wondered about those pieces. They tried to work out what the idea behind the music was. They were all pieces related to battle or war. The students also saw a slideshow about Chinese musical instruments by Zhao Yanping and got to listen to music played on the guzheng, suona, gu and erhu.
Next week, we will be spending some time exploring musical instruments in the Performing Arts room.
We are a Grade 3 class in Singapore. We hope you enjoy sharing our learning journey with us this year. Our class teacher is Ms. Vicky and our Teacher's Assistant is Ms. Noreen.
