In Literacy this week we focused on choosing a main idea about a topic and generating supporting details. For example, "I like apples" is my main idea and the supporting details are "It's convenient to carry around, it's tasty and I like the way it looks". We reviewed the structure of persuasive writing and thought about how we would use the text features of a non-fiction book to find answers for research in our Unit of Inquiry. The students continued to work on their own reading and writing goals and spelling patterns.
In Mathematics this week we were reviewing the properties of 2D shapes. We built a vocabulary bank through sorting shapes in different ways and describing the similarities and differences and the students visualised shapes. We learnt about congruent and similar shapes, regular and irregular polygons and rotation. The students used geoboards to construct congruent and similar shapes. Finally, the students made slideshows to define and explain 2D shape vocabulary. We also practised word problems related to elapsed time.
Unit of Inquiry
In our unit work this week, students worked in groups to create soundscapes representing the idea of water. They had to select instruments whose sound would convey something related to water, foe example drops of water or a storm. They tried to write their composition down in a graphic score, thinking of how they could represent the sounds with symbols. They then played with the website Soundation to work out how to record the tracks of their composition next week. The students also worked on research question for their information report about an instrument or tool used to express ideas. They browsed some websites which contained virtual collections of instruments.
