In Literacy, we continued practising finding the main idea in a piece of writing, using text features to help us. We wrote our own main ideas and thought of supporting details to go with the main idea. We have begun collecting adverbs from our new class readaoud book, Danger Dan Confronts the Merlion Mastermind, to help us add detail to our own writing later. We also practised how to break down very long words to help us read them. We can break the words into syllables or we can look for other words we recognise within the word. What is your strategy for breaking down this word?
The students reviewed perimeter by solving the problem in the photograph. They had lots of great ideas and had to do a lot of adding and subtracting to work this out. We then moved on to area by exploring 'tetronimoes'; shapes built with four interlinking cubes. The students had to cover an 8x10 rectangle with each tetronimo to see if it would cover the space perfectly. This involved lots of guess-check-improve work until students spotted patterns they could use. We talked about area being the measurement of space and how we measure it in square units. The students then went on to try to cover the tetronimo shapes with squares and rectanges. This will lead, next week, into working out the area of the triangles through reasoning.
Unit of Inquiry
At the beginning of the wee, we recorded the group water compositions and talked about what ideas were being represented by the sounds. We spent the rtest of the week working on researching musical instruments for an information report. The students had to group their questions and make sure their answers will tell some kind of interesting story, not just give a fact. We looked at different search engines and databases where we migth find our information and started collecting our data. The students know they need to record their sources. The students will continue with this work next week.
