In Daily Five this week, we reviewed the choices available to students (read to self, work on writing, word work, listen to reading and read to someone) and the behaviour expectations that go with them. We looked at how to make complex sentences that can help us explain the changes in The Lorax, which we read as part of our Unit of Inquiry work. The students made sentences like 'Before the invention of the thneed, the bar-ba-loots ate truffalo fruits.'
The students also wrote letters from the Once-ler to the Lorax. This allowed them to show an understanding of perspective and empathy as well as to practise some letter-wrting conventions and their handwriting.
This week was a review week. We compared how tall different teachers are to practise finding the difference (subtraction) and did some problem-solving activities. The students also practised reading a bus schedule and working out elapsed time.
Unit of Inquiry
This week we started our new unit: Where we are in place and time.
The central idea is 'Inventions have changed the world'.
To get the students thinking about how an invention can change the world around it, we read The Lorax by Dr. Seuss. The students thought about what the world in the story was like before and after the invention of the thneed. To help understand the concept of perspective, we used the technique of hotseating, where one person pretends to be a character and the others ask questions. Then the students filled in speeech bubbles about how the characters in the story felt and created some roleplays.
Finally, the students examined pictures of a compass, a printing press, a light bulb, a steam train and a spinning jenny and wrote down statements and questions about life before and after the invention. Next week they will carry out some research into these inventions.
High School Visit
We were excited on Wednesday when the Grade 11 music class came to show us their instruments and answer questions as a follow up to our information reports.
We are a Grade 3 class in Singapore. We hope you enjoy sharing our learning journey with us this year. Our class teacher is Ms. Vicky and our Teacher's Assistant is Ms. Noreen.
