This week, we had a whole class spelling focus on the past tense 'ed' ending for verbs, and talked about the importance of suffixes and prefixes in English. We also worked on building complex sentences. Students had to combine clauses in a game using 'before', 'after', 'when' and 'although'. We thought about how to begin a retell or summary of a book by stating the main idea. The students wrote thank you letters to Grade Eleven for their visit last week and continued with their personal goal based work in Daily Five.
This week we began a new unit on multiplication and division. We thought about things that come in equal groups and used this to talk about the three parts of a multiplication sentence:
The students then practised solving some multiplication word problems and reflected on the strategies they know and prefer to use:
We will be working on different strategies, getting the students to extend their understanding and range of multiplication. We will also be learning about patterns in multiples and arrays as a model for multiplication.
Unit of Inquiry
The students worked in groups this week to find out about the steam train, the spinning jenny and the light bulb. They identified the changes these inventions had brought to the world. Next week, we will look at some aspects of industrialisation and look for connections between the inventions of the time.
