A lot of our literacy work this week was in preparing the video for our summative assessment. We did, however, find time to work on our strategy for retelling a story and we reviewed parts of speech. We looked at a poem by John Clare and identified the words that represented sounds. Students practised tuning in to new words, then using dictionaries or prior knowledge to work out the meanings.
In mathematics this week we have been focusing on time. We have been practising reading the time on an analogue clock to the nearest minute and paying attention to how the hour hand moves. We have worked on improving how carefully we read schedules and timetables and have started working on calculating duration or elapsed time. We will combining our work on data handling and time with our sleep and screen time survey.
Unit of Inquiry
This week we did our summative assessment for the 'how we organise ourselves' unit. In groups, students had to design a new city and create a video advertisement for it. The first stage was brainstorming what systems they would need in their city. Then they had to create a map. From there they allocated government responsibilities, prepared a storyboard for their video and planned what they were going to say. They chose green screen backdrops and today we filmed the ads and the students edited them in the Green Screen app. Next week will put up a display showing the process the students went through and the videos will be available to view on You Tube.
