We set up stations to inquire into how energy is transferred. The grades 3.2 worked with 3.1. We looked at sound, wind, potential and kinetic forms of energy.
Last week, we developed an understanding of perimeter first and then area by measuring objects around us in the school. We first used non standard unit of measurements such as pencils, erasers and even our feet. For example, the perimeter of the carpet in our classroom is 21 board markers, or 24 feet that belong to Yuuki, or 14 feet that belong to Seoyul.
Next we used measuring sticks to measure the objects and calculated perimeter. We applied our understanding to design and create photo frames. We experienced a slice of Japanese culture a few Fridays ago thanks to Hyuga's mother and Yuuki's father. We learnt the correct style to seat our selves on the floor, how to hold the cup before sipping maccha tea and more, while a Ninja silently watched us from afar, much to the excitement of our students! Then we were lucky to learn some sign language that is very special to Ninjas only. We launched into our inquiry into How the World works by first exploring our understanding of different types of energies around us. We set up six stations and the students worked in pairs to touch and explore and guess the energy that was associated with each station. For example, an electric lamp, a musical instrument, an elastic band, a pot with warm water, a magnet, an apple.... Next, once we had identified some key types of energy - light, sound and heat, the students worked in pairs again to demonstrate one of these forms of energy at work around us. They were to use any materials in the classroom to plan their demonstration. The students showed their creative thinking and collaboration skills in the clever examples they came up with. Central Idea:
Understanding energy allows us to make sense of the world. Lines of inquiry - Forms of energy How energy works in everyday life Transfer of energy People experiment to understand the world/Scientific Inquiry When Charlie and Amelia went downstairs to the canteen to collect their own lunches, they searched for Shoichi's missing lunch box and brought it up for him. How lucky are we in G3.2 to have such thoughtful students?!
All of grade 3 visited the Gardens by the Bay today to generate ideas for personal narratives and to strengthen our collaboration skills. Blogpost by Holly and Amelia:Our class went on a field trip to gardens by the bay . We had a great time we both liked the bit when we got in the water . We saw a chicken in like a tank thing it looked golden. We sketched all the things we saw like the super trees and flowers. Holly:I feel happy and excited but I did not like the heat .I hope we go back soon. Amelia:I feel happy and hot . I want to go again WHAT THE OTHERS HAD TO SAY -
YUUKI: I liked the golden bird because the bird was so pretty. ELLIE: What I liked about the field trip was the water park because it was cold and it felt good! EVAN: I like played in a water park.Because I like to play in the watER. RAY: I liked playing at the playground the most because we get to play tag with each other. And i also get to climb ropes and slide slides! HYUGA: I liked the playground because we can play lots of time and it was big. I FELT happy. JOAO: liked the field trip because it was fun because he did amazing stuff!! SOSUKE: I loved the play ground because the it was so big, wide and we could go so far. SHOICHI: The play time was best in the because I like playing and running so I liked play time most. ARYAVEER: I liked the part when we played tag in the the water park. I liked it because it had a water bucket which used to fall on you if you walk near it, and it was so big! We used our speaking skills and confidence to share our families beliefs and values. We discovered that we had many beliefs and values in common. This will support our understanding of culture and of who we are.
We explored different scenarios and came up with ways that we could show empathy. What can you say? What can you do?
A boy is sitting by himself during lunch break. What can you say to him: RAY: "Can I sit with you?" ARYAVEER: Do you want to play with us?" All of grade 3 students and teachers were very fortunate to learn about the Han Bok, and two musical instruments from Korea. Anne's parents read out a traditional Korean tale, and we had the opportunity to listen to a Korean tune on the flute played by Anne's mum. We were open-minded in embracing a new culture and learnt how to greet each other in Korean language. As risk-takers, many students volunteered to wear the Han Bok and played the instruments. ARYAVEER: I learnt that in traditional Korean culture, small girls can wear big skirts" SARA: " I liked listening to Korean music on the flute." HYUGA: " I liked playing the drums." |
